Crossing Sagarmatha Gate & Exploring Namche Hilltop | EBC Trek Day 3
As we continue our acclimatization day at Namche Bazaar, we hike a little higher to explore the hillside trails above this famous Sherpa town. After a short walk through a dense forest area, the path opens up onto a beautiful hilltop overlooking the entire valley. The view instantly becomes wider, clearer, and more dramatic—classic Himalayan scenery at its best.
Our first major landmark of the day is the Sagarmatha National Park Gate, an iconic point for trekkers heading toward Everest Base Camp. Crossing this gate feels symbolic, as it marks the beginning of the true high-altitude world of the Khumbu region.
Just beyond the entrance stands the traditional Hotel Sherwi Khangba, known for its Sherpa architecture and scenic location. Next to it is the well-known Everest Museum, which displays historic mountaineering photos, archives, and Sherpa cultural heritage. Although the museum wasn’t open during our visit, it remains one of the best places to learn about Everest expeditions and life in the Himalayas.
This route is a perfect acclimatization hike for trekkers who stay an extra day in Namche. Not only does it help the body adapt to altitude, but it also allows visitors to experience some of the region’s most scenic and cultural highlights.
